About the author

Welcome to the author page of E. Mark Windle.

I am a UK-based freelance writer and book author with interests in human rights, global health, culture and biography.

My passion for writing was developed during a former career as an NHS dietitian. Specialising in the care of patients with critical illness and major burn injury, my clinical papers and commentaries were published in several medical and nutrition journals. These included the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics, Journal of Burn Care and Research, Complete Nutrition and Dietetics Today. The British Dietetic Association also invited me to contribute to the Manual of Dietetic Practice (4th Edition), the core textbook used by the profession in the UK.

In 2019, after 25 years of working in healthcare, I decided to pursue writing on a full-time basis. I now write books, articles and other content in a range of humanitarian, cultural and biographical settings. A few examples:

The Hundred Year Hunger, a book exploring the timeline of food insecurity and malnutrition in Gaza.

• NGO research and website content for refugee and aid organisations active in Gaza, Egypt and Greece.

• Biographical services for Sheridan Hill-Real Life Stories LLC (North Carolina, USA), and for Story Terrace (London, UK) as a senior writer / ghostwriter.

• Several books exploring soul music history, including House of Broken Hearts: The Soul of 1960s Nashville and The Tempests: A Carolina Soul Story. Also collaborations with record labels to research and compile liner notes for African American music releases.

• Commentaries on cultural and social history, like The Keffiyeh—On Culture, Consumerism and Sumud and The Power of Song: From the Underground Railroad to Chicago Rhythm and Blues.

A full portfolio of my work can be found on this website.

Away from the day job, you’ll find me exploring the Yorkshire Dales, travelling the world, running my online bookstore A Nickel And A Nail, and the travel, culture and relocation website Cultura Magazine.
