Biased BBC Gaza Coverage. Staff and Watchdog Allegations

The BBC is no stranger to accusations of both right- and left-wing leanings in reporting domestic and foreign affairs.

While it maintains that its aim is to provide impartial journalism in global crises, in 2024 over 100 members of staff at the BBC and a further 230 media industry members signed an open letter accusing the organisation of biased reporting through misrepresentation and favouring Israel in the coverage of events in Gaza and wider Palestine.

BBC bias in reporting time and emotive language

Analysis in 2025 by the Centre for Media Monitoring (CfMM) of 3,873 BBC articles and 32,092 broadcast items also showed that, on a per fatality basis, Israeli deaths were given 33 times more coverage than Palestinian ones. The language used in relation was also more emotive. Words like “massacre” were associated more with content relating to Israeli deaths. “Murder” was used 220 times in connection with Israeli deaths and once for Palestinians in the samples selected.

Suppression of views and diligence issues

The CfMM findings also demonstrated a significant trend in the suppression of genocide allegations. BBC presenters would ‘shut down’ genocide claims in over 100 documented instances, whilst making no mention of statements by Israeli officials which likely or arguably pointed towards genocidal intent.

Then this year, other watchdog organisations picked up the BBC on reporting inaccuracies, including a failure or tardiness in correcting false information. Camera UK noted that the organisation allowed a storyline to run for over seven months that approximately 650 lorries a day brought aid into Gaza before the events of 7 October 2023, when verified sources confirmed that 500 trucks entered, of which only 70 were carrying food.

BBC and government complicity

In his book Complicity: Britain’s Role in the Destruction of Gaza, journalist and broadcaster Peter Oborne offers interesting perspectives on how pro-Israel lobbyists and the UK government have used the BBC and other media to play down the issue of starvation and malnutrition in Gaza in the public arena.

The Times journalist, author and broadcaster Melanie Philips appeared on BBC’s Question Time in March 2024, stating video footage of markets in Gaza with stocks of food could be seen on You Tube—which was true, but ignored the fact that there was no footage  date stamp and no consideration given to the fact that there were multiple thousands of people struggling to afford escalating food prices and were living in particularly high risk regions, where physical access to available food stocks was impossible. Keir Starmer also perpetuated the denial of genocide during his time as PM, to the point where even use of the word at Labour Party events was strictly censored and blocked from appearing in conference literature and event titles.

Oborne continues to challenge BBC executives about under reporting, pro-Israeli bias and institutional closeness to past and current government stances.
