Caledonia Soul: How Scotland Helped Shape Northern Soul

E. Mark Windle 14 July 2026.

A major new book by author Martin Gavin focuses on Scotland’s contribution to the northern soul scene, from its modernist and R&B origins of the 1960s to the present day.

The passage of time can easily erase important elements from soul music history if they are left undocumented. In the case of the northern soul scene, the subculture and classic dance venues of the late 1960s and 1970s have been extensively presented in print. Yet there remains so much of the wider northern soul story to be told. That’s where Martin Gavin’s unique angle comes in. In what is surely among of the most ambitious and comprehensive publications of its kind, his focus is on Scotland’s contribution to the soul music community.

Using a heady mix of social commentary, extensive research and oral history, the author guides us through modernist beginnings and the live music scene of Glasgow and Edinburgh of the 1960s. He introduces us to key players there on the R&B scene, and to the Tamla Motown and soul music explosion.

We are also taken on a journey through northern soul’s halcyon days of the 1970s—not from the perspective of an isolated Scottish scene but one that interacted with and was influenced by venues, DJs and record dealers on both sides of the border.

Martin then explores a rebirth: after Wigan Casino closed its doors and the world assumed northern soul was all over, die-hard record collectors, dancers and enthusiasts kept the fire burning with a new musical philosophy. Influenced in no small way by the Stafford’s Top of the World all-nighters and forward-thinking DJs, the Scottish soul scene took on a life of its own at venues like the Crown Hotel, the Glenrothes YM and Allanton all-nighters embracing traditional uptempo northern soul, beat ballads, R&B, latin soul and modern soul.

That spirit continues to this day. Documentation of Scotland’s important role in this musical subculture has been a long time coming. I for one applaud Martin’s deep commitment to preserving its history.
